What is the WhatsApp Business API?
The WhatsApp Business API is Meta's official interface for medium and large businesses to send and receive WhatsApp messages at scale through their own software, rather than tapping on a phone. It supports automation, multiple agents on one number, and integration with your CRM or booking system.
It is different from the free WhatsApp Business app, which is built for a single small business owner on one device. The API is for teams and software: it lets automated systems and multiple staff handle conversations on one business number.
Meta requires businesses to use an approved provider to access the API, and outbound messages that start a conversation must use pre-approved message templates. Ongoing replies within a set service window are freer form.
In Singapore, where WhatsApp is a default channel for enquiries, it is a common way to reach a new lead fast and let them reply in the app they already use, while staying within consent and the rules on business messaging.
