I run a one-man business, is this overkill for me?

It is built for exactly the one-person business, because you are the one who cannot answer the phone mid-job. A larger firm has staff to catch calls. You do not. The auto text-back and booking is the closest thing to hiring a receptionist without hiring anyone, and it costs a fraction of a wage. For a solo tradesperson, the missed-call leak is the single biggest hole, so this is where the return is highest.

Will customers be put off by an automated message?

Not if it sounds like you and comes fast. A customer who just called and could not reach you is glad to get a reply in a minute saying you are on a job and asking what they need. That reads as responsive, not robotic. The mistake is a stiff corporate auto-reply. Write it the way you would actually speak, keep it short, and it lands as good service.

Is it against the rules to text people who call me?

Replying to someone who just called your business is answering an enquiry, not marketing, because they contacted you first. The PDPA Do Not Call rules, overseen by the Personal Data Protection Commission, are aimed at unsolicited marketing to numbers without consent. Where you must be careful is not turning those numbers into a promo list later without consent, and always offering an opt-out. This is not legal advice, so check your own position.

What if the customer wants to talk, not text?

Then they will say so, and you call them back the moment you are down off the ladder, now knowing it is worth calling because the text already told you what they need. The text-back does not replace a call. It buys you the time to make the call without losing the job in the gap. Many customers, though, will happily finish the whole booking over WhatsApp and never need a call at all.

Can it actually book the job, or just catch the lead?

It can do both. The catch is the text back in the first minute. The booking is the conversation carrying through to a real time from your calendar, confirmed, with the address and problem noted. You decide how far to automate. Some tradespeople let it book straight in, others let it catch and qualify and then confirm the slot themselves. Either way you stop losing the job at the missed call. Stop losing the 2pm job to the next guy on the list. Turn every missed call into a booked slot on your calendar before the customer dials anyone else, and let the work you are already doing be the only thing your hands are busy with.
